The PIECES Evidence-based Primary Cancer Prevention Programs Repository:

The PIECES Repository is a searchable database of evidence-based cancer prevention programs. These programs target modifiable cancer risk factors and are adaptable to the European context. The repository includes programs in six key areas: tobacco control and second-hand smoke exposure; alcohol consumption; physical activity; diet; HPV infection; UV and sun exposure.

This repository is designed to enhance findability, access, and credibility of existing evidence- and practice-based cancer prevention programs. It provides immediate access to detailed information and, if available, materials to facilitate implementation. Each program entry includes information on its theory of change (i.e., working mechanisms, logic model) and an appraisal of its evidence of effectiveness. You can also find contact information of the developers and researchers involved in these programs to find additional materials.

By using the PIECES repository, you can access valuable resources and support to help implement effective cancer prevention programs to your local context.

Programs in the repository:

Interventions or programs in this repository are defined as complex interventions that combine different behavioral and/or pharmacological components. Pharmacologic treatments alone are not included as interventions or programs. Interventions or programs were retrieved through:

    Cochrane reviews
Input from organizations involved in the PIECES project
The National Cancer Institute Evidence-Based Cancer Control Programs (NCI- EBCCP) website.

Programs selected can be both scientifically validated as well as practice-based. Preferably, evidence is demonstrated through experimental or quasi-experimental studies. Studies should be adaptable to the European context and target the general population or large communities, excluding specific sub-populations (e.g., psychiatric patients, individual with HIV).

About us:

The PIECES project is a collaborative effort that aims to adapt and implement existing evidence-based programs to improve implementation outcomes. With a team of 15 international organizations, we work together to make primary cancer prevention programs more effective and accessible.

Our mission is to develop and share an innovative online toolkit to facilitate selection, adaption and implementation of cancer prevention programs. This theory-based toolkit offers a step-by-step approach to adapt programs and overcolme impementation barriers by linking them to proven implementation strategies. The toolkit helps implementers transform these strategies into actionable work plans. The goal is to improve fit within different target populations and real-world settings.
